Biography
Born in 1961 at the “Peace Border” between Brazil and Uruguay, Gustavo Dalinha’s work illuminates geographic, cultural and spiritual boundaries. A student of professors Alberto Ielisich, Osmar Santos and Britto Velho, Dalinha earned a scholarship to study Visual Arts at the School of Arts, ASPES, 1978-1979. In January, 1989 he moved to West Berlin where he witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall. His participation in the political, social and cultural transformation unleashed by reunification influenced his artistic work.
For more than twenty years, Dalinha has worked concurrently in his studios in Berlin / Germany, Porto Alegre / Brasil and Buenos Aires / Argentina, traveling between cultural and geographic frontiers, focusing on the experimental use of a unique material, the Antaimoro Paper.
The paper, which comes from Madagascar, serves as the recipient, transmitter and reflection of the artist’s creative intentions. Dalinha’s continuous spiritual searching, puts him in contact with The Fourth Way, and a central topic of his work is the Harmonius Developing of Man.
Beyond his career as visual artist, Dalinha has taught and led workshops for children, adults, and people with disabilities and socially marginalized in Germany, Brazil and England.
Gustavo Dalinha has held many individual and collective exhibitions. His work can be found in private collections and cultural institutions in Europe, Asia, and North and South Americas. Today, he works in parallel at his studios in Berlin and Buenos Aires.
